Nexus of Law and Society (NLS) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to publishing interdisciplinary, empirical, and theoretical scholarship examining the complex interactions between legal systems, social institutions, and cultural practices. Operating on the principle that law is both a product of societal values and an instrument of social change, NLS provides an authoritative scholarly platform for legal scholars, sociologists, anthropologists, criminologists, and public policy researchers. The journal prioritizes research that explores how legal norms are enacted, experienced, negotiated, and contested in everyday social life and institutional environments.
NLS welcomes original empirical research articles, socio-legal case analyses, theoretical treatises, and systematic reviews covering law and social dynamics. Core thematic areas include, but are not limited to:
Socio-Legal Dynamics & Everyday Law: Legal consciousness, informal justice mechanisms, customary law interactions with state legal orders, and the lived experiences of law in diverse communities.
Law, Social Change & Institutional Reform: Legal mobilization, judicial impact on social policy, civil society advocacy, and legislative responses to rapid societal transformation.
Justice, Equality & Social Stratification: Law and gender, minority rights, socio-economic disparities in legal access, indigenous legal systems, and anti-discrimination frameworks.
Crime, Deviance & Social Control: Sociological approaches to criminal justice, restorative justice practices, community-based policing, penal policies, and correctional rehabilitation.
Globalization, Migration & Transnational Law: Transnational legal orders, refugee and migration governance, cross-border labor rights, and the localization of international legal norms.
Nexus of Law and Society (NLS) is published biannually (2 issues per year: June and December), utilizing an online-first publication pipeline to facilitate timely peer review and immediate global open-access dissemination.
To uphold academic integrity, methodological soundness, and interdisciplinary rigor, NLS enforces a strict double-anonymous peer review protocol. All submitted manuscripts undergo preliminary editorial screening to assess thematic alignment, originality, structural clarity, and adherence to international academic ethics (following COPE standards). Manuscripts passing desk review are evaluated by at least two independent international experts specializing in sociology of law, empirical legal studies, or legal anthropology. Review criteria center on theoretical depth, methodological precision, analytical clarity, empirical validity, and contribution to the socio-legal discipline.
Mission Statement: "The mission of Nexus of Law and Society is to advance global understanding of the mutual influence between law and social reality by publishing rigorous, evidence-based scholarship, fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue, and providing open-access knowledge to support equitable legal institutions and socially responsive jurisprudence worldwide."
